Antibiotics ensure that potential life threatening bacterial infections are treatable, so why are we opting to do nothing? If we opt to do nothing, treatments for common infections in many cases will become non-existent.
Everyone is Impacted!
This global health threat poses a significant threat to everyone, but children are especially at risk as they are more vulnerable to bacterial illness. Infants under the age of 1 are 10 times more likely than adults to contract a Salmonella or other infections. Take a minute to think about this impact! Children’s immune systems are not fully developed and as such may not yet have acquired the full range of antibodies required to ward off infection. Children are also exposed to more disease-causing bacteria through day-to-day activities such as school, childcare and hand to mouth behaviors. With the rate of antibiotic resistance the number of effective drugs available for sick infants and children will be few if any.
This is why it is critical to educate children and young people on basic infection prevention & how antibiotics work. This can prove to make the world of difference for the future of our antibiotics. Additionally, making small changes to the way we approach our daily hygiene and cleaning can radically improve our health and the health of others.
Empowering our children to ask insightful questions about their health & hygiene
With access to the internet and many useful free online health resources, there is no reason why schools and young environments cannot embrace this information and build it into the school curriculum. This will have a significant and broad societal and community impact, as children will talk to siblings, parents and grandparents.
