So, if you have not heard of biofilm, it has existed just as long as bacteria has on our planet
In the early 70’s scientists only really began to understand the major impact biofilm has on human health.
Be warned, biofilm should not be seen as just another nuisance to deal with, or overlooked when it comes to Public Health and Safety, as it is an ever-present threat to our global health.
Biofilms are complex colonies of microorganisms that serve as a protective coating to shield microbes from environments such as heat, UV light, cold, disinfectant chemicals and antibacterial drugs. The components of biofilm can greatly enhance the bacteria or viruses resistance to antibiotics, enhancing the longevity and potential harm caused by pathogens.
So, what is biofilm?
It can often appear as slime or discolouring, found in your sinks, floor drains, build-up around leaking faucets/ sprayers, unused toilets, floor mops, shower floors, closets in commercial buildings and almost all surfaces. Some biofilm can also go unnoticed as it is not always easily seen because it is found in many out-of-the-way locations such as air handlers, air conditioning evaporation trays, water cooling towers and fountains.
Biofilms can cause a variety of health problems, ranging from your common earache to a specific bacterial infection found in people living with a genetic disease called cystic fibrosis. Due to the growing problem of MRSA and other infections, it is important to understand the value of ensuring a balanced and healthy environment. Even more important, you need to have an understanding of biofilm which is considered essential to any consideration of cleaning and maintaining any facility, no matter what its function – from a food processing facility to a gym or a hospital to a farm.
So, here's the thing, Probiotic products significantly lower the risk of infection via the levels of bacterial contamination, as they do in hospitals and other facilities – and just as important, they continue to protect surfaces for days at a time after each cleaning. It is proven that probiotic products actually clean far better than other cleaners – and remove biofilm-producing organisms. Probiotic products are unique in that they keep on cleaning between applications.
The key point here is that the biofilm produced over the weeks, months and years are a thousand or so layers of hardened material, almost impossible to remove with the incorrect products. It takes a basic understanding of biofilm to understand why an environment will keep improving over time with the use of Probiotics. So, it normally takes from between 2-15 days for probiotics to eat away all the biofilm that has accumulated and thus is able to vastly lower the risk of contamination, pathogens, viruses, mould and dirt.
This proves that dangerous and unpleasant chemicals are not needed and probiotic cleaning products are extremely economical to use. Also, antimicrobials are more effective when applied to clean surfaces that have biofilm buildup removed.
Nature always knows best and is always ahead of the pack.
